Last Spring, the Canadian Bar Association British Columbia Branch (CBABC) partnered with the Electronic Recycling Association (ERA) for the A2J Tech Drive to assist individuals in rural and remote settings obtain access to legal services by closing the gap and providing needed electronic devices.

As a result of the partnership, we were able to bring in more than 180 donated items.  Together we donated 2 refurbished laptops, 2 iPads and 1 cell phone to the Islands Wellness Society , to help residents of Haida Gwaii, BC.

The Islands Wellness Society (IWS) is an inclusive community-based agency that provides a variety of services in a safe and supportive environment. IWS respectfully acknowledges that we are located on the unceded and traditional territory of the Haida Nation. Their services endeavour to promote empowerment, overcome trauma, address violence, promote equality and enrich the lives of children and families on Haida Gwaii.

IWS have 5 programs of service: Child Care Resource and Referral, Child and Youth Counselling – now called the Prevention Education Advocacy Counselling Empowerment (PEACE) Program, Outreach, Victim Services, and Women¹s Counselling. They also recently adopted the food bank, now called ³Feed the People² Food bank.  To learn more about the Islands Wellness Society (IWS) please visit their website by clicking here.

As the CBABC continues to advocate for fair access to justice across all of BC, they are grateful to see the willingness of the legal profession to step up, recycle, and support our local communities.
