ERA Donates 10 iPhones to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) to Support the Phone It Forward Program
The Electronic Recycling Association (ERA) is proud to support the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB) by donating 10 refurbished iPhones to their Phone It Forward program in Calgary, Alberta. This meaningful initiative is designed to empower individuals in the blind and low-vision community by providing accessible smartphones that enhance independence and daily functioning.
How the Phone It Forward Program Works
The Phone It Forward program transforms donated iPhones into accessible tools for people who are blind or partially sighted. Once an iPhone is donated, CNIB’s Accessible Technology Lead configures it with essential accessibility features, including VoiceOver, magnifier, audio descriptions, and other assistive tools. The phone is then matched with a qualified recipient who receives personalized training on how to navigate the device confidently and independently.
Many of these recipients come from low-income backgrounds and do not have the financial means to access such technology on their own. For them, receiving an accessible smartphone is often life-changing—providing greater access to information, communication, navigation, and employment opportunities.
Urgent Need for More iPhones in Alberta
Despite the success of this program, the demand for accessible devices continues to exceed the available supply. CNIB currently has a growing waitlist of clients in need and is seeking 40 additional iPhones for distribution across Alberta, including both the Calgary and Edmonton offices.
