Keeping unwanted electronic gadgets in your home or office increases the risk of loss or theft, both of which could lead to serious problems. All of the sensitive data you have on your computer –banking information, social insurance numbers and passwords – is easily recovered by tech-savvy scammers once devices are in their possession – your passwords are no match for them.
Identity theft and extortion are the most reported types of cyber fraud in Canada. According to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC), there were a combined 61,210 reports between the two forms of crime.
In support of Fraud Prevention Month, the Electronic Recycling Association (ERA) and the Port Moody Police Department partnered together to help protect your private information through data destruction. We held an electronics collection and data shredding event on March 12th, 2022 at City of Port Moody City Hall to encourage citizens to bring unwanted electronic devices such as hard drives, computers, laptops, phones, tablets, tapes and other small devices storing sensitive data, where they were securely destroyed OR wiped clean and re-used for FREE.
